Swindon Kata Course - May 2025

What a Day at the Swindon Higashi May Course!

Yesterday, Swindon Higashi Karate Kai had the pleasure of hosting our May Course, and what a fantastic day it was!

We kicked things off with some light basics to get everyone warmed up and moving. Then the class split into two groups: Dan grades focused on Kihon Kumite, diving deep into precision and timing, while Kyu grades broadened their knowledge with an introduction to the powerful kata Seishan.

Later, our senior grades took the lead, guiding small groups through Kihon Kumite, breaking down form and key principles in detail — a great opportunity for everyone to refine their skills.

After a well-earned break, we got back to it with a mix of advanced kata practice, including Jion, Rohai, Neiseishi, and Naihanchi. Others took part in exciting workshops on knife defence and even had the chance to explore Escrima!

It was a packed day full of learning, movement, and great energy — and judging by the smiles, thoroughly enjoyed by all.

A huge thank you to:

 • Sensei Jon Dunn (Chief Instructor, HKK Wales)

 • Sensei John Hurley

 • Sensei Eugene Smith

 • Sensei John Spurgeon

 • Sensei Tony Sergent

… and everyone who helped capture the day with photos

A special mention also to Sensei Graham Chuck from Kenkyukai for making the journey to Swindon — it’s always an honour to train with and learn from you.

Can’t wait for the next one!
